Muses

Much like birds of prey

Their call echoes, as it pierces through the drowned church bells

Like a hunters arrow cutting through the stag

He once stood silently in the morning mists of the forest

The painters brush consumes him

These old walls no longer retain his youth

Yet he continues to drink through the ardent, starry glass

Filled with the golden tendrils of fish as they flitter by

Devoured by feathers

Leaving him lost at sea

Complete and wild

Apparitions of appearances

One can still hear him in the slow steady hum of the fog horns as they blow by in the night

Oil pastel on wooden plank

A little about the poem –

Edgar Allen Poe has been on my mind as we move through autumn, and the days grow darker. As has the artistic process. How it can often be fleeting. It’s easy to become hard on oneself when not constantly putting out material. Poems can come a little easier for me while working on the marathon of the novel. It’s a softer approach to turning on the faucet, as is painting. So when I find myself stuck, I will reach for the oil pastels or work on a poem… and then get back to edits.

About the novel –

Five nights in Marfa is coming along.

I’m on the 4th round of edits, and have a clearer vision of where the book is going. Where my dialogue was messy. Where I thought I didn’t need pieces, but then realized I actually did. How there were too many scenes in one chapter. How one part makes more sense sooner than later and/or vice versa. The list goes on and on.

Pretty soon here I will reach out to some beta readers to get feedback and polish up once more before researching literary agents and publishers.

This is my first go at writing a novel. It seems everyone has advice on the best way to do things. Ultimately we all have to see what works best for each and every one of us though. I am taking what works for me, and learning how to craft a novel for the first time. It’s an exciting and sometimes tiring learning curve!

Happy National Novel Writing month to those of you who are participating!!! May the writing gods be in your favor!
